What the visa allows
The Working Holiday visa, subclass 417, gives you twelve months in Australia from your first entry.
It lets you work to fund your trip, study for up to four months, and leave and come back as many times as you like while it is valid.
It also lets you do three months of specified work to qualify for a second year. That is the famous 88 days counter.
The catch fits in one line: no more than six months with the same employer without permission.
The requirements
You need a passport from an eligible country and you must apply from outside Australia. The general age limit is thirty, but it is raised to thirty five for only three nationalities, including France. French citizens can therefore apply until the day before they turn thirty six, which gives them five more years than most other applicants.
You also need to apply on your own, without a dependent child coming with you, never to have entered Australia on a 417 or 462 visa before, and to prove that you have enough money to get by on arrival.
The official, up to date requirements are on the first Working Holiday visa page. It is the only page that counts.
The application, step by step
Everything is done online, there is no paper file and no consulate appointment.
1. Create an ImmiAccount
The account is created on the immigration portal. It will follow your application from start to finish, so keep your login details safe.
2. Prepare the documents
A valid passport, proof of funds in your account, and depending on the case civil status documents or a medical certificate. Immigration may ask for extra documents while processing.
3. Fill in and pay
The application fee is shown on the official page, it was 840 Australian dollars at the time of writing. Payment is made by card, at the end of the form.
4. Wait for the written grant
It takes from a few days to several weeks. Immigration states clearly not to book a ticket before receiving written confirmation. Take that advice seriously, processing times get longer when the volume of applications rises.
5. Receive the grant notice
The visa arrives by email. Nothing is stuck in your passport, it is an electronic record linked to your passport number. If you change passports later, you must tell immigration.
Activating the visa and counting the twelve months
Two dates matter, and many people mix them up.
The first is the entry deadline: you must set foot in Australia within twelve months of the visa being granted, otherwise it lapses.
The second is the activation date: the twelve months of stay start on your first entry, not on the date it was granted. A visa granted in January and activated in September gives you until the following September.
That gap is good news. It gives you time to prepare your departure, put money aside and choose the season you arrive in.
Second and third year
The second year is granted by doing three months of specified work in a regional area during the first. The third requires six months of the same kind of work during the second.
Not every job counts, not every region either, and work that is not properly declared does not count at all. The details are on the page dedicated to the 88 days.
The mistakes that cost a lot
Buying your ticket before having the written grant. It is the most common mistake, and the most expensive when processing takes longer.
Picking the wrong subclass. The 417 and the 462 look alike but do not cover the same countries and do not have the same specified work rules.
Going through a paid intermediary for a process you can do perfectly well alone. Immigration publishes everything for free.
Underestimating the proof of funds. It is not always checked, but it can be, and arriving without a cushion is a bad idea anyway.
Frequently asked questions
What is the age limit for a working holiday in Australia for French citizens?
The general limit is thirty, but France has an agreement that raises it to thirty five, along with Canada and Ireland. A French citizen can therefore apply as long as they are not yet thirty six. It is your age when you apply that counts, not when you leave.
How much does the Australian Working Holiday visa cost?
The application fee was 840 Australian dollars when this page was last checked. The amount is reviewed regularly, usually once a year. The up to date fee is always on the official visa page.
How long does the visa take to be granted?
Most complete applications are processed in a few days to a few weeks. It takes longer as soon as a document is missing or a medical exam is requested. Immigration publishes its current processing times, the only reliable source.
Can you do a second working holiday in Australia?
Yes. A second visa is granted after three months of specified work during the first one, and a third after six months during the second. The work must be declared, paid at the legal rate and done in an eligible industry and area.
Do you need a return ticket to get the visa?
No, a return ticket is not required when you apply. You do, however, need to be able to show that you have the means to leave the country, and the airline may ask about it at boarding.
Shall we prepare your working holiday together?
Everything written here is free and detailed. But between reading the steps and putting your own application together, there is a step that many people take weeks to make.
I can do it with you: the visa application and its timeline, choosing your insurance, your starting budget, the first days' paperwork and the strategy for finding a job. We start from your departure date and what you have already done.
One single package, built around your departure, with a price decided after a first call. That call is free and commits you to nothing.
